Game of Thrones season 4 challenge - Day 6: Favorite Quote

okay um

but let’s talk about this for a second

let’s talk about how Game of Thrones, the show, has taken each of the female characters featured in this gifset (which is a lovely gifset, don’t get me wrong), and then most of the rest of them and “hurt” them in mental, physical, emotional and narrative ways. Like how with Meera, they had to add in a “girlfight” with Osha because that’s what women do, they’re catty and bitchy and try to undercut each other. Let’s talk about how they featured Dany naked so often that Emilia Clarke had to request they keep her clothes on, and persistently sexualized a character who in the books is 14 years old and subject to unwanted, repeated marital rape (after they changed the wedding night scene from consensual to non-consensual sex, because it’s more edgy). Ellaria they did surprisingly all right with (from what I watched) but she’s a woman of color and thus sexually “exotic” and alluring and a temptress, according to TV!show logic. While this dimension of her character was hinted at in the books, it became an excuse for more brothel scenes in the show (shock! surprise!)

And let’s not even get started on Cersei and how That Scene in the episode that made me quit watching the show was clearly designed to punish her for messing with fan favorite Good Guy Tyrion, and the director then insisted that he didn’t film a rape scene. Or how Brienne has been turned into a stone cold badass who kills men because she can, because a Strong Female Character who doesn’t like killing and has emotions and is (in the books) 17 or 18 and deeply devoted to the ideal of chivalry and honor and heroism…. well we can’t have that. She is the Warrior Woman and therefore becomes the Amazon trope. Sansa, likewise. They added in the gang-rape scene in season 2 which was described by the director, again, as “beautifully choreographed and like a ballet.” They take every opportunity to show her belittled or powerless or abused except when she finally becomes A Player and hence now “worthy” of consideration. And of course, heaven forbid we acknowledge the utter grossness of what Petyr’s doing to her.

Let’s talk about how they made Asha/Yara, of all people, use the word “cunt” to insult Theon. Or how Arya has been turned into this cheery little “badass” when she’s actually a traumatized child soldier. Or the butchery of Catelyn Stark. Or how they had to turn Robb Stark’s wife, Jeyne, from a quiet, shy, sweet ordinary noblewoman to spunky tomboy, not like other girls!Talisa, because otherwise why would Robb decide to marry her, yanno? It couldn’t, you know, be his honor and that he’s Ned Stark’s son and following in the same tragic path in a world that often doesn’t reward boilerplate heroic choices.

We could talk about appeasing the fans who hated Roz the Plot Device Whore by having her brutally murdered by Joffrey, or the countless naked women and brothel scenes included to remind you that the show is on HBO, or the way sexual violence is persistently used when not needed, or the way consensual sex scenes specifically and consistently become non-consensual, or the many other ways in which yes, indeed, everywhere in this show!world, they hurt little girls and women alike, and one of the main reasons I am no longer watching despite being a die-hard ASOIAF fan since 2003.
